Week
14 Raiders @ Bengal's W 27-10 |
Setting
the scene: Playoff prospects are very much alive, but hardly assured,
as the Bengal's take a three-game winning streak into this week’s
home date against Oakland. “We had a good end to November,”
said head coach Marvin Lewis. “Now let’s have an even
better December.” From a 4-5 record after their Nov. 12 loss
to San Diego, the Bengal's have risen to 7-5 and control of their
own fate in the AFC playoff race. Five AFC teams are 7-5 — Cincinnati,
Denver, Jacksonville, Kansas City and the N.Y. Jets. And based on
tiebreakers through Week 13 play, the Bengal's and Jets would advance
In last week’s play, the Bengal's blunted rival Baltimore’s
hopes of sewing up the AFC North Division title. Their 13-7 win on
Thurs., Nov. 30 snapped a five-game Ravens winning streak. It was
an emotional victory, and now Cincinnati comes off a “minibye”
— nine days without a game — to face a Raiders team that
has struggled. Thus, an inevitable media question to Lewis was: “Are
you worried about a letdown, especially with a big Monday night game
the next week?” “No,” Lewis responded. “ ...
tell me who we play next week.” “Indianapolis.”
“See?” Lewis said. “I couldn’t even have told
you that.” “We’ve just got to keep playing,”
Lewis went on. “Every time you go out there, you’ve got
an opportunity to lose a game if you don’t play well enough.
That’s the way it’s supposed to be.” WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh
put it a bit more emotionally. “We’re a desperate team,”
he said. “We’re desperate to get every win we can. We’ve
already lost five. Even one more, it could be too many in this conference.”
Last year at the 12-game mark of the season, the Bengal's were 9-3.
They went on to clinch a division winner’s spot with two games
still to play. This race will clearly be far more frenzied, but lately,
the Bengal's have looked much more like their AFC North championship
outfit of 2005. The offense has shown good balance, and the defense
is on a steep rise. After ranking No. 32 in net opponents’ yards
through 10 games, Cincinnati shut out Cleveland, then kept Baltimore
off the board for almost 59 minutes. The defense set club records
for most consecutive quarters (seven) and minutes (123:20) without
allowing a point. The Raiders rank third in the NFL in total defense
(275.8 yards allowed per game) and first in pass defense (143.0).
Oakland ranks last in the NFL in turnover differential (minus-13),
while the Bengal's rank fourth (plus-9).
Outcome: The Raiders did not have a chance honestly. Bengal's
had several turnovers, Carson threw a couple of interceptions. Bengal's
still roll 27-10. Next Monday night at the Colts should be a great
team. Hopefully we try to run with Rudi, seems to have worked well
for the Jaguars in Week 14 as they stomped the Colts. Who Dey! |
